In an exciting development for Chinese sports, former Olympic gold medalist Zhou Jihong has been elected as the new president of the Chinese Swimming Association (CSA). The election took place on Tuesday during the CSA’s Sixth Congress of Members in Beijing.
Zhou, who made history by winning the women’s 10-meter platform gold medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She is poised to lead China’s swimming community toward ambitious goals over the coming years.
“We will focus on the strategic goal of building China into a global sports power by 2035,” Zhou stated. “Our efforts will promote development in competitive sports, youth sports, and nationwide fitness initiatives.”
Alongside Zhou’s election, Huang Wei and seven other members were chosen as vice presidents of the CSA, with Huang concurrently serving as secretary-general. The new leadership team is expected to usher in a new era for Chinese swimming, fostering talent and enhancing the country’s presence on the international stage.
This leadership change signals a continued commitment to elevating China’s status in the world of sports, with a particular emphasis on swimming. Young athletes across the nation can look forward to increased support and opportunities as the CSA seeks to nurture the next generation of champions.
