Team China showcased their dominance at the Sudirman Cup with a commanding 5-0 victory over the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) in Group A on Monday, securing an early spot in the knockout stages.
In the opening mixed doubles match, China’s World No. 2 duo Huang Dongping and Feng Yanzhe overpowered Tang Chun Man and Ng Tsz Yau, winning 21-8, 21-8 in just 38 minutes. The impressive performance gave China an early lead.
Next up, Olympic gold medalist Chen Yufei took on Lo Sin Yan in the women’s singles. Chen was in top form, dominating the court to claim a swift 21-8, 21-4 victory, doubling China’s advantage.
The men’s singles match saw World No. 1 Shi Yuqi face off against Lee Cheuk Yiu. Shi started strong with a 7-point streak, securing the first game 21-12. Lee fought back fiercely in the second game, edging out a 22-20 win. However, Shi regained control in the decider, finishing the match 21-12, 20-22, 21-12, and securing China’s unassailable 3-0 lead.
With the victory assured, the remaining matches continued. In the women’s doubles, Tan Ning and Liu Shengshu defeated Lui Lok Lok and Tsang Hiu Yan 21-10, 21-8, extending the lead to 4-0.
The final men’s doubles match was a close contest, but Wang Chang and Liang Weikeng prevailed over Hung Kuei Chun and Lui Chun Wai with a score of 21-18, 21-18, sealing the 5-0 clean sweep.
China will next face Thailand to determine the top spot in Group A. Meanwhile, Hong Kong SAR will compete against Algeria in their final group match.
