Taklimakan Rally Kicks Off With High-Speed Canyon Run in Xinjiang

The engines roared to life as the Taklimakan Rally launched its first stage on Wednesday in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. Racers sped through the breathtaking landscapes of the Wensu Grand Canyon in Aksu Prefecture, facing a challenging route that tested both skill and endurance.

The opening stage stretched nearly 160 kilometers, featuring washed-out paths, river crossings, and a thrilling high-speed dash through the canyon’s twisting trails. Competitors navigated treacherous terrain amidst the grand cliffs and rugged beauty of the canyon, making for an exhilarating start to the rally.

In the motorcycle division, Czech rider Martin Michek of the Hoto Factory Racing Team demonstrated outstanding performance. Michek secured the top spot by crossing the finish line in 2 hours, 3 minutes, and 36 seconds, showcasing his agility and speed on the demanding course.

The car category saw fierce competition as well. The duo of driver Fan Gaoxiang and navigator Fu Liguo from the Hebei Qian’an Jiujiang Auto and Motorcycle Sports Club emerged victorious. They maintained their momentum from qualifying to complete the stage in an impressive 2 hours, 3 minutes, and 11 seconds.

As the rally progresses, the second stage is set to cover 115 kilometers, taking participants to the city of Alar. Anticipation builds as racers prepare to face the vast desert terrains that lie ahead.

“Everything went smoothly,” said the 32-year-old driver Fan after his opening win. “This was the first long stage, but it still felt more like a warm-up. For the next stage, we know there will be more desert terrain, so we will ease up the pace a bit. This was a high-speed stage, and once we hit the desert, that’s when the real challenges of the Taklimakan Rally begin.”

The Taklimakan Rally, known for its grueling courses and stunning backdrops, continues to captivate motorsport enthusiasts around the world. With the initial stage setting a high bar, racers and fans alike eagerly await the upcoming challenges as the rally unfolds across Xinjiang’s diverse landscapes.
