Inter Milan Appoint Club Legend Cristian Chivu as New Head Coach
Inter Milan have turned to former player Cristian Chivu to lead them into a new era, naming the Romanian as the successor to Simone Inzaghi ahead of the upcoming Club World Cup.
The appointment comes after Inter’s disappointing 5-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final, a defeat that left fans and players reeling. Chivu, 44, takes the helm after a brief but impressive stint at Parma, where he guided the team to Serie A safety.
“Inter Milan is pleased to welcome Cristian Chivu as the new head coach of the first team. The coach has signed a contract with Inter until 30 June 2027,” the club said in an official statement.
Chivu’s deal is reportedly worth 2.5 million euros per season. His arrival marks a return to the club where he enjoyed significant success as a player, including three Serie A titles and a Champions League victory in 2010 under Jose Mourinho. He played 169 matches for Inter over six seasons and also has experience with Roma.
“I thank the club, staff, players, and fans for believing in me and our project,” Chivu wrote on Instagram regarding his departure from Parma. “Together we overcame obstacles and wrote a page in Parma’s history which will remain in my heart.”
Chivu’s first challenge will be the Club World Cup match against Monterrey next week at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. He inherits a squad eager to bounce back from recent setbacks and rekindle the glory days that Chivu himself was a part of.
Inzaghi, who led Inter for four seasons and navigated financial difficulties to keep the club competitive, departed after the Champions League defeat and has since taken the managerial position at Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal, also participating in the Club World Cup.
The Inter faithful are hopeful that Chivu’s familiarity with the club and fresh coaching approach will reinvigorate the team. All eyes will be on his debut as they look to start a new chapter in the club’s storied history.
