Shandong’s table tennis star and Olympic champion Wang Chuqin overcame a bout of low blood sugar to help his team secure a 3-0 victory over Jiangsu in the Chinese Table Tennis Super League (CTTSL) on Tuesday in Xiong’an, Hebei Province. This marks their fourth consecutive win in the league.
In the opening doubles match, Shandong’s Liang Jingkun and Lin Yun-Ju dominated Liang Yanning and Song Zhuoheng with straight games of 11-7, 11-9, 11-6, giving Shandong an early lead.
Wang Chuqin faced off against Quan Kaiyuan in the men’s singles. Midway through the match, Wang experienced symptoms of low blood sugar, but after a quick treatment involving some chocolate and drinks, he rallied to win 11-9, 13-11, 11-2, extending Shandong’s lead to 2-0.
In the final match, Liang Jingkun returned to defeat Song Zhuoheng once more, this time in singles, with scores of 11-9, 11-5, 11-6, sealing the 3-0 victory for Shandong.
“I played as I normally do,” Wang said after the match. “I took a big lead in the second game, but then I found myself distracted when I needed to pay attention. Also during the second game, I felt my blood sugar had dropped. But I ate some chocolate and had some drinks to make me feel better.”
On the women’s side, Shanghai secured their first win of the season by defeating Huangshi 3-0. In the opening doubles, Chen Yi and Sun Mingyang beat Wang Tianyi and Han Fei’er with scores of 12-10, 11-8, 11-6.
He Zhuojia then faced Huangshi’s Shin Yubin from the Republic of Korea in the singles match. After a tight first game that ended 11-9, He dominated the next two games 11-5, 11-7, pushing Shanghai ahead 2-0.
Chen Yi returned for a singles match against Han Fei’er, winning a hard-fought battle in straight games 13-11, 11-8, 11-7 to wrap up Shanghai’s victory.
