Early Screening and Management Safeguarding Lung Health

Breathe Easy: Early Lung Checks Crucial This Winter

As winter approaches, the chill in the air isn’t the only thing to watch out for. Our lungs face extra challenges during the colder months, making it vital to keep them healthy.

November 20 marks the 23rd World COPD Day with the theme “Know Your Lung Function.” But what exactly is COPD? Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD, is a preventable and treatable condition that makes it hard to breathe. Symptoms include feeling breathless, chronic coughing, and producing a lot of mucus.

Globally, COPD is a major concern. It’s the fourth leading cause of death worldwide, claiming 3.5 million lives in 2021 alone—about 5% of all deaths. The numbers are rising due to factors like smoking and air pollution.

In countries like China, nearly 100 million people are affected by COPD, making it the third leading cause of death there. Unfortunately, awareness is low. Less than 10% of the public knows about COPD, and only 3% of those affected realize they have it.

The good news? COPD can be managed. Quitting smoking, avoiding polluted air, and getting vaccinated can help. Treatments include medications, oxygen therapy, and special breathing exercises.

Early detection is key. Chinese medical scientist Zhong Nanshan emphasizes regular lung function tests—like checking your blood pressure—to catch COPD early and start treatment sooner.

Recognizing this, China’s National Health Commission has added COPD health services to its public health program. Community health centers now offer lung function screenings and standard treatments to help people detect the disease early and manage it effectively.

If you’re over 35 or at risk, consider getting a lung function test. Taking care of your lungs now can lead to a healthier, happier future.
