Over 500 scientists and experts from China and the United States gathered in Beijing on November 16, 2024, for the Sino-American Forum of Academicians International Health Conference. The event aimed to address global health challenges and called for enhanced collaboration between the two countries in medical research, particularly in the fight against cancer.
Hosted by the National Cancer Center of China, participants shared their latest insights on topics such as cancer research trends, medical innovation, cancer prevention, chronic disease management, cancer epidemiology, precision oncology, cancer genomics, and the application of artificial intelligence and big data in cancer research.
Chen Zhu, academician and honorary professor at the School of Medicine of Ruijin Hospital of Shanghai Jiaotong University, highlighted the fruitful and transformative past collaborations between China and the U.S. in cancer research. “Our joint efforts have provided new solutions and hope to people affected by cancer worldwide,” he said. “Looking ahead, we must continue and deepen our cooperation, from advancements in precision medicine to innovative cancer prevention strategies.”
Victor Joseph Dzau, co-chair of the conference and president of the United States National Academy of Medicine, emphasized the importance of scientific collaboration in facing unprecedented global health challenges. “The world needs to believe more than ever in the transformative power of science,” he stated. “This gathering signifies our shared commitment to inspiring new ideas and laying the groundwork for impactful actions that will shape global health and save millions of lives.”
He Jie, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and director of the National Cancer Center of China, expressed hope that the conference would foster deeper cooperation between China and the U.S. in oncology. “I hope to further promote more precise, efficient, and safer healthcare services worldwide and reduce the global burden of cancer,” he said.
The conference marks a significant step toward establishing an effective mechanism for cancer research cooperation between the two nations, aiming to benefit patients globally through shared knowledge and innovation.
