China Boosts AI Education in Schools to Prepare Youth for Tech Era

China is taking a significant step towards the future by enhancing artificial intelligence (AI) education in primary and secondary schools. The Ministry of Education has announced plans to prepare the younger generation for the emerging technology era.

The ministry emphasized the need to cultivate creativity, ignite scientific interest, and develop digital skills among students. Schools across the country have been instructed to introduce AI into their curriculums, integrate it into regular teaching, and conduct regular assessments to track progress.

Starting in early primary school, students will gain hands-on experience with AI technologies. As they progress to higher grades, the focus will shift to understanding and applying these technologies. By senior high school, students will engage in AI projects and explore cutting-edge applications.

An AI section will be added to a national smart education platform, pooling quality resources and making them more accessible to students. Colleges, universities, research institutes, and high-tech companies are encouraged to open their AI labs and exhibition halls to young learners.

Minister of Education Huai Jinpeng described AI as a “gold key” for the education system, highlighting its potential to shape the future of education with both opportunities and challenges.

Earlier this year, China selected 184 schools as pilot bases to explore innovative approaches in AI education. The goal is to develop exemplary cases that can be expanded nationwide. The ministry plans to establish more educational bases in the future.
