New York City, USA — China unveiled a new international group at the United Nations headquarters on Tuesday, aiming to promote global cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI). Co-chaired by China and Zambia, the initiative seeks to harness the power of AI to foster fairness, inclusivity, and sustainable development worldwide.
Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the UN, emphasized the importance of using AI to benefit all nations. “We must harness AI to promote fairness and inclusivity, uphold multilateralism, and focus on capacity-building,” he said during the launch.
The “Group of Friends,” as it is called, aspires to build broad partnerships and support the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. “This group can help the international community seize the immense opportunities presented by digital development,” Fu added.
Fu also addressed the challenges that come with rapid AI advancement. “The development of AI could bring conflicting rules, social risks, and ethical challenges,” he warned. “We must always keep in mind that high-quality AI development can only be possible when robust security guardrails are in place. AI must always be under human control.”
Representatives from more than 80 countries, including Egypt, Pakistan, Brazil, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Russia, the United States, France, and the United Kingdom, attended the meeting. Their participation signals a global interest in collaborative efforts to shape the future of AI responsibly.
The launch of this international group marks a significant step toward uniting nations in the pursuit of a smarter, safer, and more equitable world through AI technology.
