China Releases Comprehensive Digital Soil Database

China Unveils Massive Digital Soil Database to Boost Science

China has unveiled a massive digital soil database that could revolutionize science and agriculture across the nation. Launched in Beijing on Thursday, the comprehensive soil profile dataset covers China’s vast territories, reflecting the country’s diverse soil resources and quality.

The dataset consists of 25 volumes and over 27 million words, gathering data from more than 63,000 soil profiles across over 2,200 counties nationwide. The project began in 1999 and involved combining artificial intelligence, data science, and cartography with traditional soil science methods.

Researchers believe this database will provide crucial support for soil science research and inspire innovative studies in geosciences, environmental studies, agriculture, and economics. It’s also contributing to major national projects, including China’s third national soil survey.

Published by the Zhejiang Science and Technology Publishing House, the dataset not only preserves valuable historical soil survey data but also paves the way for future advancements in various scientific fields.
