Trumps Aides engage Tech Giants to Address Online Drug Sales

Trump’s Team Engages Tech Giants to Fight Online Drug Sales

President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team is reaching out to major tech companies, including Google, Microsoft, and Meta, to address the growing issue of online drug sales. The team has invited representatives from these tech giants to a meeting in mid-December to discuss strategies for combating the sale of illegal drugs on their platforms.

Jim Carroll, who served as the drug czar during Trump’s first term, is leading the initiative. The team aims to understand the companies’ priorities and challenges in tackling online drug trafficking, with a significant focus on fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid contributing to a surge in overdose deaths.

Social media platforms Snap and TikTok have also been contacted for the meeting. However, they have not yet responded to requests for comment. The inclusion of these platforms highlights the administration’s recognition of the role social media plays in the distribution of illegal substances.

Trump has pledged to take stronger action against fentanyl trafficking, particularly from Mexico. He has threatened tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada unless these countries intensify efforts to curb the flow of fentanyl and address issues related to illegal migration.

In addition to international pressure, Trump has announced plans for a U.S. advertising campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of fentanyl use. This move underscores a multifaceted approach combining enforcement with public education to combat the opioid crisis.

Earlier this year, Meta faced investigations over its role in facilitating the sale of drugs on Facebook and Instagram. Similarly, eBay reached a $59 million settlement with the Department of Justice over concerns related to illegal drug sales. These incidents emphasize the critical need for tech companies to monitor and regulate content on their platforms to prevent illicit activities.
