As the world marks World Strengthened Immunity Day on December 15, attention turns to the pivotal role of vaccines in safeguarding public health. Established by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1988, this day emphasizes the importance of immunization in preventing vaccine-preventable diseases and highlights the collective effort needed to maintain community health.
China, a nation once impacted by diseases like polio and diphtheria, has made remarkable strides in immunization over the past decades. Since launching its Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) in 1978, the country has prevented over 300 million cases of infectious diseases. By incorporating the hepatitis B vaccine into the national childhood immunization program in 2002, China achieved over 90% coverage among newborns, becoming one of the first countries to launch such an initiative.
“Vaccination rates have led to a continuous decrease in disease incidence, with over 95% reduction in many targeted diseases,” epidemiologist Feng Zijian noted in a recent interview. He highlighted that diphtheria has been virtually eliminated in China for nearly two decades.
China’s commitment extends beyond its borders. Evolving from a vaccine recipient to a major contributor, China’s efforts have significantly bolstered global health. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the EPI in 2024, the WHO reports that more than 154 million lives have been saved worldwide, with China playing a substantial part in this achievement.
