Chinas 41st Antarctic Expedition Ships Set to Sail to Qinling Station

China’s Snow Dragons Lead Antarctic Mission to Build New Station

Two ships from China’s 41st Antarctic expedition, the research icebreaker Xuelong 2 and cargo vessel Yong Sheng, have converged in Antarctica to embark on a groundbreaking mission. Xuelong 2, also known as Snow Dragon 2, will carve a path through the icy waters, guiding Yong Sheng to the site of the new Qinling Station.

Once they reach Qinling Station, team members will disembark to begin constructing new facilities and setting up equipment. This marks a significant step in expanding China’s research capabilities in Antarctica.

Yong Sheng set sail from Jiangsu Province on November 20, loaded with around 16,000 cubic meters of construction materials for the station’s supporting infrastructure. Meanwhile, Xuelong 2 departed from Guangzhou on November 1, alongside its predecessor, Xuelong (Snow Dragon).

These vessels are not just transporting materials; they play a crucial role in scientific research, personnel transport, and logistical support. Earlier in December, they arrived at Zhongshan Station, China’s largest research facility in southeastern Antarctica, delivering essential supplies to sustain ongoing research efforts.

Organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources, China’s 41st Antarctic expedition utilizes a fleet of three vessels—Xuelong, Xuelong 2, and Yong Sheng—to enhance scientific exploration and international collaboration in the region.
