China Launches State-of-the-Art Deep-Sea Research Vessel

China has taken a giant leap in deep-sea exploration by launching its first homegrown comprehensive research ship, the Tan Suo San Hao, or Exploration No. 3. Delivered on Thursday by the Guangzhou Shipyard International Co., Ltd., this advanced vessel is set to revolutionize global deep-sea scientific research, including in the challenging polar regions.

The 104-meter-long ship boasts impressive capabilities, including manned deep-diving and two-directional ice-breaking at both the bow and stern. With a displacement of around 10,000 tonnes, it can travel up to 15,000 nautical miles and accommodate a crew of 80. Its design enables China to extend its manned deep-diving operations across the world’s oceans, significantly enhancing the nation’s capacity for deep-sea archaeological exploration.

The Tan Suo San Hao project was a collaborative effort funded by the Hainan provincial government, a company in Sanya City, and the Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Since its approval in December 2022, over 100 institutions have worked together, overcoming technological challenges in key areas such as ice-zone ship design and intelligent ship control technology.

This achievement underscores China’s commitment to advancing marine science and exploring the uncharted depths of our planet’s oceans. The launch of the Tan Suo San Hao marks a significant milestone in the global pursuit of deep-sea knowledge and technological innovation.
