China’s Digital Economy Soars to $6.7 Trillion in 2023

China’s digital economy has reached new heights, recording a staggering revenue of approximately $6.74 trillion (48.45 trillion yuan) in 2023, according to the fifth national economic census released on Thursday by the National Bureau of Statistics.

With over 2.92 million corporate enterprises operating within its core digital industries, China’s digital sector has employed more than 36 million people by the end of 2023. These industries encompass businesses providing digital technologies, products, services, infrastructure, and solutions that drive the digital transformation across various sectors.

Breaking down the numbers:

  • Digital Technology Application: Leading the employment charts, this sector boasts 1.43 million enterprises employing 14.61 million individuals. These companies integrate digital technologies into traditional industries, enhancing efficiency and innovation.
  • Digital Product Manufacturing: With 262,000 enterprises, this sector employs 13.37 million people and reported the highest revenue among all digital sectors, totaling 20.48 trillion yuan. These companies focus on creating hardware and devices that are foundational to digital infrastructure.
  • Industries Driven by Digital Factors: Comprising 950,000 enterprises, this segment employs 6.66 million people and generated 9.74 trillion yuan in revenue. These industries rely entirely on digital technologies and data as core components of their operations.
  • Digital Product Services: This sector includes 274,000 enterprises with 1.52 million employees, generating 4.18 trillion yuan in revenue. They provide essential services such as software development, cloud computing, and other digital solutions.

The remarkable growth in China’s digital economy underscores the nation’s commitment to technological advancement and digital integration across all facets of its economy.
