Tesla’s Shanghai energy storage megafactory is on track to finish construction by the end of this year, marking a significant milestone for the electric vehicle leader in China.
The factory, which began construction in late May, will focus on producing Megapack energy storage batteries. Covering about 200,000 square meters, it’s Tesla’s first such facility outside the United States and their second plant in Shanghai, following the 2019 gigafactory.
Mass production is set to kick off in the first quarter of 2025, aiming for an initial output of 10,000 units annually—equivalent to approximately 40 GWh of energy storage. This massive capacity is expected to bolster global energy storage capabilities and accelerate the transition to sustainable energy.
The project represents a total investment of around 1.45 billion yuan (about $199 million), highlighting Tesla’s commitment to the Chinese market and the global push for renewable energy solutions.
Tesla’s expansion in Shanghai underscores China’s pivotal role in the company’s global strategy and reflects the growing demand for large-scale energy storage solutions worldwide.
