Imagine diving into the deepest parts of the ocean, exploring mysteries that have remained hidden for centuries. China is making this a reality with the commissioning of its new deep-sea research vessel, Tansuo-3. Unveiled in Sanya City, Hainan province, this cutting-edge ship is set to revolutionize ocean exploration.
The Tansuo-3 marks a significant expansion of China’s capabilities in manned submersible exploration, allowing scientific teams to reach new depths across the world’s oceans. Scheduled to undertake missions starting in 2025, the vessel will first carry the full-ocean-depth Human Occupied Vehicle (HOV) known as Shenhai Yongshi, or “Deep Sea Warrior,” for scientific research, equipment trials, and underwater archaeology in the South China Sea.
Later in the year, Tansuo-3 will begin manned deep-sea submersible operations in the abyssal zones of the oceans. This vessel is China’s first comprehensive scientific research ship capable of conducting global deep-sea exploration, including in polar regions, and can support manned deep diving in icy waters.
Measuring 104 meters in length and displacing about 10,000 tonnes, the Tansuo-3 was independently designed and built by China. It can reach speeds up to 16 knots (around 30 kilometers per hour) and has an impressive range of 15,000 nautical miles (approximately 27,780 kilometers) on a single voyage. The ship accommodates up to 80 crew members and is equipped with ice-breaking capabilities at both the front and rear, making it suitable for polar expeditions.
A standout feature is its large moon pool measuring 6 meters by 4.8 meters—an opening at the base of the hull that facilitates scientific operations even under challenging conditions like floating ice. This innovative design ensures that exploration can continue regardless of harsh maritime environments.
The commissioning of Tansuo-3 represents a significant breakthrough in China’s development of key technologies, boasting domestically developed equipment and independently designed control systems. It’s a testament to China’s commitment to advancing oceanic science and exploration, paving the way for new discoveries in the depths of the world’s oceans.
