China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi has declared that China will take “resolute countermeasures” if the United States continues to apply arbitrary pressure. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Wang emphasized that cooperation between China and the U.S. is mutually beneficial and essential for both nations.
“One should not fantasize that it can suppress China and maintain good relations with China at the same time,” Wang said. He highlighted that attempts to hinder China’s progress would not succeed and would only harm the prospects for collaboration.
When questioned about competition in technology, Wang dismissed the notion that restrictive policies could stifle innovation. “High fences and small yards cannot suppress the spirit of innovation,” he stated. “Decoupling and supply chain disruption will only lead to self-isolation.”
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, praised the continuous efforts of the Chinese people in pursuing technological advancement. “We are witnessing an ever-expanding horizon for China to become a science and technology powerhouse,” he remarked.
He used vivid imagery to convey his message: “Where there is blockade, there is breakthrough; where there is suppression, there is innovation; where there is the fiercest storm, there is the platform launching China’s science and technology skyward like the Chinese mythological hero Nezha soaring into the heavens.”
The foreign minister also called for science and technology to be a shared asset for the global community. “Science and technology should not be used to put up an iron curtain. It should be the wealth that benefits all and is shared by all,” he asserted.
Concluding his remarks, Wang expressed China’s willingness to collaborate internationally. “China is ready to share the fruits of our innovation with more countries and jointly explore the mysteries of the stars and oceans,” he said.
