Chinas Top Universities Expand Enrollment for Ai and Strategic Talent

China’s Top Universities Boost AI Enrollment to Nurture Future Talent

Several of the Chinese mainland’s leading universities have announced plans to expand their undergraduate enrollment in 2025, placing a strong emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI) and fields critical to national strategic priorities.

Tsinghua University and Peking University, two of the most prestigious institutions, are each increasing their undergraduate intake by approximately 150 spots. Tsinghua is set to establish a new undergraduate general education college focused on cultivating interdisciplinary talents in AI, aiming to foster innovators capable of bridging multiple disciplines.

Peking University’s expanded enrollment plan centers on fields of national strategic needs, fundamental disciplines, and emerging frontiers. Similarly, Renmin University is adding over 100 places, particularly in AI-related areas.

Other universities, including Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Wuhan University, are also increasing spots in AI, renewable energy, and integrated circuits to align with national strategic initiatives.

The 2025 government work report highlights the importance of advancing the “AI Plus” initiative. This initiative seeks to better integrate digital technology with manufacturing and market strengths, advocating for the widespread application of large language models and the development of next-generation intelligent products.

Earlier this year, the Chinese mainland released its first national action plan to build a “strong education nation” by 2035. This plan aims to coordinate education development, improve innovation efficiency, and strengthen the country’s capabilities in critical sectors.
