Re-wiggling Rivers: Restoring Nature’s Curves to Revive Ecosystems

Rivers around the world are under immense pressure from pollution, drought, and human interference. Many have been straightened to make way for development and agriculture, disrupting their natural flow and harming ecosystems.

But a movement known as “re-wiggling” is turning the tide by restoring rivers to their natural, winding paths. In Norfolk, England, the River Stiffkey is a shining example of this transformative approach.

This 29-kilometer chalk stream was straightened decades ago, damaging its fragile ecosystem. Pollution from wastewater and agriculture further threatened the river’s health. In response, the Norfolk Rivers Trust, alongside hundreds of local volunteers, embarked on a major restoration project.

By reconnecting a two-kilometer section of the river to its floodplain and recreating its natural curves, they have brought the river back to life. Wildlife like egrets, otters, and kingfishers have returned, the water is cleaner, and biodiversity is thriving once again.

This re-wiggling success story demonstrates that when we give rivers room to breathe and bend, both nature and communities benefit. Similar projects are gaining momentum across the UK and beyond, showcasing how vital healthy rivers are for the environment and for people.
