UNOOSA Director Calls for Peaceful Global Collaboration in Space

In a recent statement, Aarti Holla-Maini, the director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), underscored the vital importance of international collaboration in space exploration. She emphasized that space activities should align with the principles of the Outer Space Treaty, advocating for the peaceful use of outer space for the benefit of all humanity.

“Space exploration transcends national boundaries and has the power to unite nations,” Holla-Maini said. “According to the Outer Space Treaty, it’s imperative that we work together to ensure that space remains a domain for peaceful purposes.”

The UNOOSA director highlighted the organization’s commitment to fostering partnerships among nations to address global challenges through space technologies. “By collaborating, we can leverage space technology to improve lives on Earth, from enhancing communication networks to monitoring climate change,” she added.

As the space sector evolves with new players and technologies, Holla-Maini called on the international community, including emerging space nations, to engage actively in dialogues and joint missions. “It’s crucial that we ensure equitable access to space opportunities, especially for countries in the Global South,” she remarked.

The Outer Space Treaty, established in 1967, serves as the foundation for international space law. It promotes the peaceful exploration of space and prohibits the placement of weapons of mass destruction in orbit or on celestial bodies.
