Google Unveils Open-Source Gemini CLI: New AI Tool for Developers

Google has just unveiled Gemini CLI, an open-source AI tool that promises to revolutionize the way developers interact with their code. Designed to run locally from terminals, Gemini CLI connects Google’s powerful Gemini AI models directly to local codebases, allowing developers to make natural language requests seamlessly.

This means that instead of typing out complex commands or sifting through documentation, you can simply tell Gemini CLI what you want in plain English. Whether it’s generating code snippets, debugging, or even creating new features, Gemini CLI has you covered.

Google already offers AI coding tools like Gemini Code Assist, but with the release of Gemini CLI, it steps into direct competition with other command-line AI tools like OpenAI’s Codex CLI and Anthropic’s Claude Code.

But Gemini CLI isn’t just about coding. It’s designed to handle a variety of tasks. You can use it to create videos using Google’s Veo 3 model, generate in-depth research reports with the Deep Research agent, or access real-time information through Google Search—all from your terminal.

Moreover, Google is embracing the open-source community by releasing Gemini CLI under the Apache 2.0 license. This means developers worldwide can contribute to and enhance the tool.

Free users can make up to 60 model requests per minute and 1,000 requests per day, which is roughly double the average number of requests developers previously made using the tool, according to Google.

With Gemini CLI, Google is taking a significant step forward in integrating AI into everyday development workflows, making coding more accessible and efficient for developers everywhere.
