Nestled at the foot of Yuelu Mountain in Changsha, central China’s Hunan Province, Yuelu Academy stands as a bridge between ancient wisdom and modern scholarship.
A Thousand Years of Legacy
Established in 976 during the Northern Song Dynasty, Yuelu Academy is one of the oldest educational institutions in China. Over the centuries, it has survived and thrived through the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, evolving into what is now Hunan University.
Where Tradition Meets the Present
Today, Yuelu Academy continues its scholarly pursuits with over a thousand students and nearly a hundred professors. The academy’s ethos of “seeking truth from facts,” famously appreciated by Chairman Mao Zedong during his time studying here, still resonates within its walls.
An Inspiring Environment
The academy’s well-preserved ancient architecture and serene surroundings provide students with a unique learning environment. They have access to tens of thousands of books in the historic library, where they can study in traditional halls or outdoors in the ancient garden, surrounded by tranquil lakes, towering trees, and flourishing bamboo groves.
“I’m so envious of the students here. I’d do another PhD just to have the chance to study in this incredible place,” said Dr. Johnson, a visitor from Australia, upon learning that the classrooms and library are reserved for ongoing study sessions.
Continuing the Pursuit of Knowledge
Yuelu Academy embodies China’s enduring respect for education and knowledge. It remains a place where the ancient pursuit of truth and wisdom inspires new generations, fostering a spirit of discovery amid historical legacy and natural beauty.
