Shenzhen and Zhuhai Residents Gain Easier Access to Hong Kong and Macao
In a significant move to strengthen regional ties, China has announced new policies that will allow residents of Shenzhen and Zhuhai to make more frequent visits to neighboring Hong Kong and Macao. This change is set to enhance mobility and deepen connections within the vibrant Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Beginning on December 1, 2024, permanent residents of Shenzhen and those holding residence permits in the city can apply for multi-entry permits to Hong Kong. With these permits, they can enjoy unlimited visits to Hong Kong for a year, with each stay lasting up to seven days. This means more opportunities to explore Hong Kong’s bustling streets, culture, and business opportunities.
For residents of Zhuhai, starting January 1, 2025, they can apply for a “one trip per week” permit to Macao. This policy allows them to visit Macao once every week, staying for up to seven days each time. Macao, known for its unique blend of Portuguese and Chinese heritage, offers a rich cultural experience just across the border.
Additionally, the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin is part of these new measures. From January 1, 2025, permanent residents and residence permit holders in Hengqin can apply for multi-entry permits to Macao, enabling unrestricted visits with stays up to seven days within a one-year period.
The Greater Bay Area, encompassing Hong Kong, Macao, and nine cities in Guangdong province, is home to around 86 million people. It’s a powerhouse of innovation, finance, and trade, with strong connections to global markets. In fact, last year, the region’s economic output was on par with that of Canada.
These new travel policies are expected to boost economic activity, tourism, and cultural exchange. For young people, this means more chances to travel, study, work, and connect with others across the region. The easing of travel restrictions opens doors to new experiences and opportunities in one of the world’s most dynamic areas.
