The city of Harbin in China’s Heilongjiang Province has once again transformed into a dazzling winter paradise as the annual Ice Harvest Festival kicks off on the frozen Songhua River. Locals and tourists gathered to witness the ceremonial extraction of the first ice block, a tradition that signals the start of the city’s famed ice and snow festivities.
Amidst traditional folk rituals, participants pulled massive ice blocks from the river, which will be used to construct the iconic Harbin Ice and Snow World. This winter wonderland features towering ice sculptures and elaborate structures, all brilliantly illuminated by colorful lights, creating a surreal landscape straight out of a fairy tale.
This year’s festival also features six-meter-tall snow sculptures of the mascots “Binbin” and “Nini,” capturing the hearts of visitors and becoming popular spots for selfies and group photos. The festive atmosphere is enhanced by a variety of activities, including ice skating, local performances, and sampling of regional delicacies.
Harbin’s Ice Harvest Festival is more than just a celebration of winter; it’s a testament to the city’s rich cultural heritage and its unique blend of Russian and Chinese influences. As temperatures drop, the excitement rises, inviting everyone to experience the magic of ice and snow in one of the world’s most enchanting winter destinations.
