In the serene wetlands of China’s Dafeng Milu National Nature Reserve, a dedicated team works tirelessly to protect a remarkable species: the milu deer, also known as Père David’s deer. Once extinct in their native land, these majestic creatures have made an inspiring comeback, thanks to the unwavering efforts of conservationists and local guardians.
Among these guardians is Yu Xiaopeng, affectionately known as the “Deer Manny.” Each day, Yu ensures that the captive-bred milu deer receive balanced and nutritious meals, carefully monitoring their health and wellbeing. His dedication exemplifies the close bond formed between the keepers and these gentle animals.
Another devoted protector is ranger Yao Yajun, a native of Dafeng. Born and raised with a deep connection to the land, Yao follows in the footsteps of his parents, who were founding members of the reserve. Come rain or shine, he patrols the reserve daily, responding swiftly whenever a wild deer is in danger. Drawing on years of experience, Yao and his team rescue distressed animals, returning them safely to their habitat.
The work of these rangers is not without sacrifices. Long hours away from family and personal risks are part of their commitment to this noble cause. Yet, the rewards are profound. Their efforts have contributed to the growth of the milu deer population in the reserve, which now shelters around 8,000 deer, with over 3,000 roaming freely in the wild.
The milu deer story is one of remarkable revival. Two centuries ago, the species faced extinction in China, with only 18 individuals surviving in Europe. In 1986, global conservation efforts led to the reintroduction of the milu deer to China, marking a turning point for the species. Andrew Loudon, emeritus professor of animal biology at the University of Manchester, fondly recalls scouting for a suitable habitat for the milu deer in China during the 1980s.
As the sun sets over Dafeng’s wetlands, the “harmony keepers” find solace in their shared purpose: safeguarding the milu deer and their environment for future generations. Their legacy of dedication ensures that these magnificent creatures will continue to grace the landscapes of Dafeng.
