China’s Minister of Transport, Liu Wei, announced on Wednesday ambitious plans to reduce logistics costs and boost efficiency across the nation’s transportation sector. Speaking at the Ministers’ Corridor of the third session of the 14th National People’s Congress (NPC), Minister Liu emphasized that a unified and open transportation market is essential for the unified national market, and cutting overall logistics costs is key to achieving this goal.
Transportation costs account for over 50 percent of total logistics costs, which also include warehousing and management. Recognizing this, the Ministry of Transport has collaborated with relevant national departments to develop a comprehensive plan aimed at reducing costs, improving quality, and enhancing efficiency in transportation and logistics.
The implementation plans span five major sectors: railways, highways, waterways, civil aviation, and postal services. In 2024, nationwide logistics costs were reduced by approximately 400 billion yuan (about $55 billion), with transportation costs decreasing by 280 billion yuan (about $38.5 billion), making up about two-thirds of the total savings.
Minister Liu highlighted that the Ministry will continue to implement various measures to further foster a unified and open transportation market. These efforts are expected to lead to additional cost reductions, quality improvements, and efficiency enhancements in the transportation and logistics industry.
