Spotted seals and rare migratory birds are returning to the Liao River Estuary in northeast China, creating a vibrant and bustling scene that signals successful wildlife conservation efforts.
Each year, spotted seals, a nationally first-level protected species, arrive at the estuary between January and March to give birth. This year, their early return coincides with the later stages of migratory birds flying south for the winter.
The wetland reserve has become a haven where various protected species, including white cranes, red-crowned cranes, and black-headed gulls, gather together. The sight of these animals thriving in their natural habitat reflects significant ecological improvements in the region.
“It’s incredible to see such a diversity of wildlife here,” said a local conservationist. “The early return of the spotted seals alongside the migratory birds shows that our efforts to protect these species are making a real difference.”
The Liao River Estuary’s revitalization is a testament to China’s commitment to environmental protection and biodiversity. As conservation measures continue, the estuary is expected to remain a crucial sanctuary for these protected species.
