East Meets West: Philadelphia Orchestra’s Triumphant Return to China’s NCPA

An extraordinary musical journey awaits as East meets West at China’s National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA). This November, The Philadelphia Orchestra marks its triumphant return to China with a full ensemble for the first time since 2019.

Under the baton of Principal Guest Conductor Marin Alsop, the orchestra will collaborate with renowned pipa virtuoso Wu Man. Together, they will present Zhao Jiping’s mesmerizing Pipa Concerto No. 2, blending traditional Chinese melodies with Western orchestral arrangements.

The program also features Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 1 "Titan", a piece that revolutionized symphonic music with its rich textures and emotional depth. The concert promises a fusion of cultures and genres, offering audiences a unique experience of harmony and diversity.

Wu Man, celebrated for her mastery of the pipa—a traditional Chinese lute—expressed excitement about the collaboration. "Bringing together Eastern and Western musical traditions is a powerful way to connect people across cultures," she said.

The Philadelphia Orchestra has a long history of cultural exchange with China, dating back to its first tour in 1973. This performance at the NCPA symbolizes not just a return, but a reaffirmation of musical bonds that transcend borders.

Don’t miss this unforgettable evening of classical music that bridges continents and generations. The concert is set to inspire music lovers and newcomers alike with its artistry and innovation.
