Chinese President Xi Jinping attended a grand ceremony in Macao on Friday to mark the 25th anniversary of the city’s return to China. The event also celebrated the inauguration of the sixth-term government of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR).
In a speech delivered at the gathering, President Xi praised Macao’s progress over the past quarter-century under the “one country, two systems” principle. “Macao has achieved remarkable development and maintained stability and prosperity,” he said.
The ceremony highlighted Macao’s unique blend of cultures and its role as a bridge between China and the Portuguese-speaking world. Local residents gathered to watch performances showcasing the city’s rich heritage.
The new Chief Executive of Macao SAR, along with principal officials, took their oaths of office in front of President Xi, pledging to continue working towards Macao’s growth and integration with the mainland.
Macao, a former Portuguese colony, was handed back to China on December 20, 1999. Since then, it has become a leading gaming and tourism hub in Asia.
