World Mayors Gather in Nanning to Strengthen China-ASEAN Ties

Nanning, the capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in South China, played host to an international gathering of mayors and city managers aimed at fostering stronger ties between China and Southeast Asian nations.

As the closest provincial capital to ASEAN countries, Nanning serves as a vital gateway for cooperation and exchange. Known for its warm hospitality and the famous “laoyou” rice noodles—translated as “old friend” noodles—the city embodies the deep-rooted friendship between China and its ASEAN neighbors.

Representatives from cities including Vientiane, Yangon, Surat Thani, Kulim, Mong Cai, Siem Reap, and Mataram convened in Nanning to explore new avenues for urban openness and collaboration. The discussions centered on building a harmonious “China-ASEAN amicable home,” highlighting shared goals in sustainable development, cultural exchange, and economic partnership.

Local officials expressed optimism about the outcomes of the dialogue. “This gathering reinforces our commitment to mutual growth and understanding,” one city manager commented. “By sharing our experiences and plans, we can collectively enhance the well-being of our cities and residents.”
