How Chinese Films Are Inspiring ASEAN Youth to Reimagine Modernity

Chinese films and television shows are gaining remarkable popularity among young audiences in Southeast Asia, inspiring a fresh perspective on modernity and future possibilities. From blockbuster sci-fi movies to engaging reality TV programs, these productions are resonating with Gen-Z viewers across the region.

When “The Wandering Earth 2” started trending on Cambodian social media, and “Ne Zha 2” drew crowds in Malaysian cinemas, it signaled a shift in cultural influence. Chinese productions began appearing more frequently on Vietnamese streaming platforms, capturing the imagination of young viewers.

“I was fascinated by the advanced technology and storytelling in Chinese sci-fi movies,” says Nguyen, a university student from Vietnam. “It made me think differently about what’s possible for our own future.”

The appeal of these productions lies not just in entertainment but in their portrayal of modern themes that resonate with ASEAN youth. The depiction of rapid technological advancement, social challenges, and relatable characters offers a mirror for young audiences to reflect on their own societies.

Li Jingjing, a host from CGTN, recently explored this trend in an episode of THE HYPE, featuring conversations with Gen-Z individuals from Malaysia, Laos, and Vietnam. They discussed how Chinese media is influencing their perspectives and aspirations.

“Chinese films show a mix of tradition and innovation,” shares Amina from Malaysia. “They inspire us to embrace our culture while looking forward to the future.”

The growing accessibility of Chinese media content in Southeast Asia is fostering cultural exchange and mutual understanding. As ASEAN youth continue to engage with these stories, they are finding inspiration to envision new horizons for themselves and their communities.

With shared themes and relatable narratives, Chinese productions are not just exporting entertainment but are contributing to a collective reimagining of modernity among young people in the region.
