The crested ibis, often called the “Oriental gem,” is once again gracing the skies of China. This remarkable bird, known for its distinctive red crest and elegant white plumage, was on the brink of extinction just over four decades ago. Today, thanks to dedicated conservation efforts, the crested ibis is not only surviving but thriving across China and beyond.
In the 1980s, the crested ibis population dwindled to just seven individuals found only in Yangxian County, Shaanxi Province. Habitat loss and environmental changes had pushed this species to the edge. Recognizing the urgent need for action, conservationists and local communities came together to protect and restore the bird’s natural habitats.
With careful breeding programs and habitat restoration, the crested ibis population began to recover. Breeding centers were established, and protection measures were enforced to safeguard nesting sites. These efforts paid off as the number of crested ibises steadily increased.
Now, as the breeding season begins anew, the “Oriental gem” can be spotted in provinces like Shaanxi, Zhejiang, and Henan. The species has even spread to neighboring countries such as Japan and South Korea, symbolizing hope for wildlife conservation across the region.
The resurgence of the crested ibis serves as an inspiring example of how dedicated efforts can revive a species from the brink of extinction. Young people and nature enthusiasts are encouraged to learn more about these magnificent birds and the importance of preserving biodiversity.
