Rescuers are racing against time in Egypt’s Red Sea after a diving boat capsized off the eastern coast, leaving four dead and eight missing. The tragic incident occurred early Monday near Marsa Alam when a large wave hit the vessel “Sea Story”, causing it to overturn.
Red Sea Governor Amr Hanafi announced on Tuesday that four bodies and four survivors have been recovered. Among the survivors are two Belgians, a Swiss national, and an Egyptian crew member, bringing the total number of survivors to 32. The identities of the deceased have not yet been released.
“Rescue operations are ongoing today, supported by a military helicopter and a frigate, in addition to multiple divers,” Governor Hanafi told AFP news agency.
The “Sea Story” had embarked on a multi-day diving trip on Sunday and was scheduled to dock on Friday in Hurghada. On board were 31 tourists from various countries, including Belgium, Britain, China, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States, along with a 13-member crew.
Authorities reported that two Polish and two Finnish tourists are among the missing, according to statements from both countries’ foreign ministries.
The vessel was fully licensed and had passed all inspection checks before the trip. A preliminary investigation revealed no technical faults, suggesting the accident was caused by natural circumstances.
Emergency services continue to search for the missing passengers, employing helicopters, naval vessels, and diving teams. Families of those involved are anxiously awaiting news as the rescue efforts persist.
