Seoul’s Snowfall Breaks Records
For the second day in a row, South Korea grappled with heavy snowfall, leading to the cancellation of dozens of flights and suspension of ferry operations. The snowfall in Seoul was the third-heaviest since records began in 1907, with some areas accumulating over 40 centimeters by Thursday morning. At least five people have been reported dead due to the cold snap, with incidents including structural collapses under the weight of snow and traffic accidents caused by icy roads in Gyeonggi Province.
Remains of Chinese Veterans Returned Home
The remains of 43 Chinese People’s Volunteers soldiers who died during the Korean War (1950–1953) were returned to China from the Republic of Korea on Thursday. A Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force Y-20 transport aircraft carried the remains and personal belongings of the fallen soldiers, landing in Shenyang, Liaoning Province. The heroes were laid to rest in a martyrs’ cemetery in Shenyang on Friday, honoring their sacrifice.
Malaysia Floods Displace Over 37,000 People
In Malaysia, torrential rains have led to severe flooding across six states, affecting more than 37,000 residents this week. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed that 322 temporary shelters have been established to accommodate those displaced. The northeastern state of Kelantan has been the hardest hit, with over 30,000 people affected. Floods are a common occurrence during Malaysia’s annual monsoon season from October to March, but the recent downpours have been especially intense, prompting red alert warnings for continuous heavy rain.
Indonesia Challenges Apple’s Investment Proposal
Indonesia has rebuffed a $100 million investment proposal from Apple aimed at building an accessory and component plant. The Indonesian government stated that the proposal does not meet the country’s requirements for smartphones sold domestically to comprise at least 40% locally made parts. Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita noted that the proposal falls short compared to Apple’s larger investments in neighboring countries like Vietnam and Thailand.
