Trumps Tariff Threat Should Be Taken Seriously Trudeau Says

Trudeau Urges Caution Over Trump’s Tariff Threats

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has urged everyone to take the tariff threats from incoming U.S. President Donald Trump seriously. Speaking on Friday in Prince Edward Island, Trudeau emphasized that Trump’s statements are not just talk.

“One of the things that is really important to understand is that Donald Trump, when he makes statements like that, he plans on carrying them out,” Trudeau said. “There’s no question about it.”

Trudeau expressed concern that imposing tariffs would not only harm Canadian workers but also raise prices for American consumers and hurt U.S. businesses. “Our responsibility is to point out that, in this way, he would be actually not just harming Canadians, who work so well with the United States, he’d actually be raising prices for American citizens as well and hurting American industry and businesses,” he explained.

The Prime Minister mentioned that Canada can approach working with Trump in the same way it did during his first term as president. On Wednesday night, Trudeau held a virtual meeting with all 13 provincial premiers to discuss the tariff threat. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland encouraged the premiers to use all their connections to convey important messages to Americans and influential individuals.

They agreed to continue working closely to advocate for Canada’s interests and the deep economic ties that benefit both countries. Canada exported over $300 billion in goods to the United States in the first nine months of this year, highlighting the significance of their trade relationship.

Earlier this week, Trump vowed to impose a 25% tariff on all products from Canada and Mexico upon taking office, stating he would keep them in place until both countries take action on drugs and illegal immigration into the United States from their territories.
