Unrwa Chief Says Pausing Aid Delivery Through Key Gaza Crossing

UN Halts Aid Deliveries Through Gaza Crossing Amid Security Concerns

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has announced a pause in the delivery of aid through the crucial Kerem Shalom crossing between Israel and Gaza due to escalating security concerns. UNRWA’s Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini expressed deep worry over the safety of aid convoys in the region.

“We are pausing the delivery of aid through Kerem Shalom,” Lazzarini stated in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. “The road out of this crossing has not been safe for months. On 16 November, a large convoy of aid trucks was stolen by armed gangs. Yesterday, we tried to bring in a few food trucks on the same route. They were all taken.”

The decision comes after a series of incidents that have jeopardized the safety of humanitarian workers and the integrity of aid supplies intended for Palestinian refugees in Gaza. The theft of aid convoys and the persistent threat from armed groups have made it untenable to continue operations through this crossing point.

UNRWA plays a vital role in providing assistance to millions of Palestinian refugees across the region. The suspension of aid deliveries through Kerem Shalom could have significant implications for the humanitarian situation in Gaza, where many rely on international aid for basic necessities.

Lazzarini called for immediate action to ensure the safety of aid routes and the protection of humanitarian workers. “We need unimpeded access to deliver life-saving assistance,” he emphasized. “All parties must respect the neutrality and inviolability of humanitarian aid.”

The pause in aid deliveries highlights the urgent need for security and cooperation in conflict zones to prevent further suffering of vulnerable populations. The international community is watching closely, hoping for a swift resolution that will allow aid to reach those in need without delay.
