Tragic Stampede at Guinea Football Match Leaves Dozens Dead

Tragedy struck in southeastern Guinea on Sunday as a stampede at a football match in Nzerekore resulted in the deaths of dozens of people, according to hospital sources. The incident occurred during the final of a local tournament between the teams of Labe and Nzerekore.

Witnesses described scenes of chaos after a disputed penalty ignited tensions between rival fans. Supporters began throwing stones, leading security forces to intervene with tear gas in an attempt to restore order.

“There are around 100 dead,” one doctor at the local hospital said, speaking on condition of anonymity. “The hospital and morgue are overwhelmed with bodies.” Another medical professional confirmed that there were “dozens of dead,” and many of the injured are in critical condition.

The tournament was being held in honor of Guinea’s military leader, Mamadi Doumbouya. Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah addressed the tragedy on the social media platform X, expressing condolences to the affected families.

Local media reported that several of the victims were children. Authorities are investigating the incident as the community grapples with the aftermath of this devastating event.
