Impeachment Motion Against South Korean President Yoon Fails

South Korean President Yoon Survives Impeachment Vote

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has survived an impeachment motion in the country’s opposition-led parliament. On Saturday, the motion failed to pass after members of his party boycotted the vote, causing it to fall short of the required quorum.

The impeachment motion was brought forward following President Yoon’s brief declaration of martial law earlier this week. The declaration had sparked controversy and led to calls for his removal from office.

National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik announced the results of the vote, stating, “With a total of 195 votes, the number of members who voted did not reach the required two-thirds majority of the total members. Therefore, I declare that the vote on this matter is not valid.”

The refusal of President Yoon’s party members to participate in the vote effectively blocked the impeachment attempt. The boycott underscored the deep divisions within South Korea’s political landscape.

President Yoon, who has faced criticism over his recent actions, remains in office following the failed motion. The political tension in South Korea is expected to continue as opposition parties consider their next steps.
