Syria’s Defense Ministry has dismissed reports claiming that army forces have withdrawn from rural Damascus, labeling them as a “disinformation campaign aimed at spreading panic.” The ministry stated that the Syrian army remains fully deployed in the countryside surrounding the capital, ready to confront “any terrorist aggression.”
The denial comes amid multiple reports suggesting that government troops have pulled back from several positions in southern provinces, including Quneitra and Daraa near the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights, as well as Sweida. These reports indicate a significant shift in the dynamics of the ongoing conflict.
Rebel forces in Daraa have reportedly advanced to within 20 kilometers of Damascus after seizing numerous military posts. There are also claims that they have persuaded some government units to surrender or defect. Late Friday, opposition fighters announced they had taken control of Daraa city, the provincial capital, marking a notable gain for rebel groups.
These developments reflect escalating clashes between government forces and rebel groups, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, as both sides vie for territorial control since November 27. The intensified fighting raises concerns about the stability of the region and the safety of its civilians.
