Omdurman, Sudan — At least 65 civilians were killed on Tuesday in an artillery attack on the city of Omdurman, just north of the Sudanese capital, Khartoum. The attack was allegedly carried out by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), according to the Khartoum State government.
The RSF, a powerful paramilitary group, has been locked in a brutal power struggle with Sudan’s army since April. The ongoing conflict has plunged the nation into chaos, leading to widespread casualties and a deepening humanitarian crisis.
Residents reported intense shelling in residential neighborhoods, forcing many to flee their homes. “We heard explosions everywhere. People are terrified,” said a local resident who wished to remain anonymous.
Medical facilities in Omdurman are overwhelmed with the influx of wounded civilians. Aid organizations are calling for immediate access to provide critical assistance.
The international community has expressed grave concern over the escalating violence. There are renewed calls for a ceasefire and a return to negotiations to prevent further loss of life.
Since the ousting of long-time ruler Omar al-Bashir in 2019, Sudan has struggled with political instability. The power vacuum has led to clashes between rival factions, with civilians often caught in the crossfire.
The Khartoum State government is urging for global intervention to help restore peace and support those affected by the conflict.
