Good news for Brazil! President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is on the mend after a second successful surgery on Thursday morning.
Dr. Roberto Kalil Filho, the president’s doctor, announced that Lula is awake and speaking following the procedure, which lasted about an hour.
Earlier this week, Lula underwent emergency brain surgery to drain bleeding between his brain and the protective membrane, a condition caused by a fall in late October at his presidential residence.
The latest surgery, called a middle meningeal artery embolization, was performed to reduce the risk of future bleeding.
“The procedure was successful. We managed to embolize that artery,” Dr. Kalil said.
President Lula is expected to be released from São Paulo’s Sirio-Libanes Hospital next week. His medical team assures that he has suffered no brain damage.
The president had complained of a headache on Monday while in Brasília, leading to the discovery of the bleeding.
A press conference with more details is scheduled for later today.
