In a surprising turn of events, South Korea’s ruling party leader Han Dong-hoon has called for the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol. Han, who heads the People Power Party, stated on Thursday that impeachment is the only solution to the chaos sparked by President Yoon’s controversial declaration of martial law.
Following a televised address where President Yoon defended his decision, Han expressed disappointment in the president’s unwillingness to step down voluntarily. He urged that President Yoon be immediately excluded from state administration, including his role as commander of the military.
“We must stop further confusion. There is only one effective method now,” Han told reporters. “In the next impeachment vote, our party’s lawmakers should enter the assembly hall and vote based on their own conviction and conscience.”
The call for impeachment marks a significant shift within the People Power Party, which had previously hoped President Yoon would resign. Attempts to persuade him have made no progress, leading Han to advocate for stronger action.
The opposition parties had submitted an impeachment motion last week, but it was scrapped after being boycotted by ruling party lawmakers. They plan to resubmit the motion later today, aiming for a vote on Saturday.
