S Korean Prosecutors Notify President Yoon of Second Summons

South Korean President Yoon Faces Second Summons Over Insurrection Charges

South Korean prosecutors have issued a second summons to President Yoon Suk-yeol, demanding his appearance for questioning over insurrection and other charges. This follows an unsuccessful attempt to subpoena the impeached president last week.

The special investigation team delivered the summons on Monday, requesting that President Yoon appear at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office in Seoul. Yoon had previously defied the initial subpoena, reportedly stating that he had yet to appoint a defense counsel.

If he agrees to the questioning, President Yoon will become the first sitting South Korean leader to appear at the prosecutors’ office as a criminal suspect. The allegations arise from his alleged imposition of martial law on December 3, which was revoked by the National Assembly just hours later.

On Saturday, a second motion to impeach Yoon was passed by the National Assembly and sent to the Constitutional Court. The court now has up to 180 days to deliberate, during which Yoon’s presidential powers are suspended.

Should President Yoon continue to ignore the summons without a justifiable reason, prosecutors may seek an arrest warrant to detain him by force.
