The Red Cross Society of China has donated $100,000 in emergency humanitarian aid to Vanuatu after a powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Pacific island nation on Tuesday.
The quake toppled buildings in the capital city, Port Vila, triggered landslides, and was described by locals as a “violent, high-frequency vertical shake.” At least 14 people have been reported dead, with more than 200 injured as rescue teams continue to search through the rubble.
Chinese Ambassador to Vanuatu, Li Minggang, announced that the emergency funds will be handed over to Vanuatu authorities on Saturday. “China will continue to provide assistance within its capacity based on the situation and the needs of Vanuatu,” Li said.
The Chinese embassy in Vanuatu has maintained close contact with the local government to assess rescue and relief needs and provide timely support.
An initial tsunami warning was issued following the quake but has since been lifted.
Relief efforts are underway as international support pours in to help Vanuatu recover from the devastating earthquake.
