New York—A senior Chinese diplomat has called on the United States to halt its "senseless blame game" and provocation over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Geng Shuang, China\’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, addressed the UN Security Council on Friday, emphasizing the need for peace talks and a political solution.
"The crisis in Ukraine continues to drag on, and the fighting has shown no signs of abatement," Geng said. "Weapons may help win the war but cannot bring about lasting peace."
He urged all parties involved to commence peace negotiations as soon as possible and called on the international community to actively create conditions conducive to dialogue. "Since the conflict started, China has been calling on the parties to realize a ceasefire, start negotiations, and restore peace as soon as possible," he noted.
Geng highlighted that Russia, Ukraine, countries of the Global South, and many European nations have welcomed China\’s role in seeking a resolution. However, he criticized the U.S. for allegedly spreading false information and discrediting China\’s efforts. "China did not create the Ukraine crisis, nor is it a party to the crisis," he stated. "The United States cannot, on the one hand, hope that China will play a greater role in ending the war, while on the other hand, keeps discrediting China\’s efforts for peace and continues to slander and put pressure on China."
The envoy called on the U.S. to "stop its senseless blame game and its provocation of antagonism and confrontation." He urged Washington to work with China and other concerned countries to build solidarity and consensus, ultimately creating an atmosphere favorable to a political settlement of the Ukraine crisis.
