Pressure Mounts on South Korea’s Acting President to Enact Special Counsel Bills

South Korea’s political scene is heating up as Park Chan-dae, the floor leader of the main opposition party, publicly called on acting President Han Duck-soo to promulgate special counsel bills by Tuesday. The bills aim to investigate impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol and First Lady Kim Keon-hee.

On Sunday, Park Chan-dae vowed to hold Han accountable if he fails to act, according to Yonhap news agency. “We urge acting President Han Duck-soo to fulfill his duty by promulgating these important bills. Failure to do so will not go unnoticed,” Park emphasized.

Earlier this month, the National Assembly passed a special counsel bill to probe allegations that President Yoon committed insurrection and violated laws over his declaration of martial law. The parliament also approved a separate bill mandating an independent investigation into two key allegations involving First Lady Kim Keon-hee: her alleged involvement in a stock manipulation scheme and interference in election nominations through a power broker.

The opposition’s push for these investigations signifies growing tension within South Korea’s political landscape. Young citizens and observers are closely watching how acting President Han will respond amid calls for transparency and accountability.
