S Korean Military Officials Indicted in Martial Law Probe

Top South Korean Generals Indicted Over Alleged Martial Law Plot

South Korean prosecutors have indicted the Army Chief of Staff, Gen. Park An-su, and Lt. Gen. Kwak Jong-keun, the head of the Army Special Warfare Command, over their alleged roles in a short-lived martial law plan early last month.

The two top military officials are facing charges of insurrection and abuse of power, according to Yonhap news agency. The indictment follows an investigation into their involvement in the proposed imposition of martial law during a period of political unrest.

Gen. Park, who served as the martial law commander, and Lt. Gen. Kwak were detained amid allegations that they orchestrated plans to deploy military forces to suppress civilian demonstrations.

Prosecutors allege that the officers abused their power by preparing to enforce martial law without proper authorization, raising concerns about the misuse of military authority in a democratic society.

This development has sparked nationwide discussions about the role of the military in politics and the importance of upholding democratic principles.
