China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi is set to visit four African nations from January 5 to 11, aiming to strengthen ties and deepen cooperation across various fields. The trip will take him to Namibia, the Republic of the Congo, Chad, and Nigeria, continuing a 35-year tradition of Chinese foreign ministers starting the new year with visits to Africa.
According to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, Wang Yi’s visit underscores China’s commitment to promoting sustained and in-depth development of China-Africa relations. The journey seeks to enhance practical cooperation and foster a stronger partnership between China and the African continent.
A Tradition of Friendship
China and Africa share a long history of collaboration and mutual support. Over the years, their relationship has blossomed into a strategic partnership characterized by shared goals and mutual benefit. The Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), established in 2000, serves as a key platform for collective dialogue and cooperation.
In recent times, China-Africa relations have continued to yield fruitful results, even amid global challenges. Initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative have facilitated infrastructure development across Africa, leading to tangible improvements in transportation, energy, and telecommunications.
Strengthening Economic Ties
China has been instrumental in supporting Africa’s development aspirations. For instance, in Nigeria, the revitalized Abuja light rail system—constructed by Chinese enterprises—has eased traffic congestion and boosted the local economy. Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo praised China’s transformation as “a source of inspiration and opportunity for Nigeria and Africa.”
To further assist African nations, China has launched plans focusing on key areas like trade, agriculture, and industrialization. Measures such as tariff exemptions for least developed countries and the establishment of “green channels” for African agricultural products aim to enhance trade and economic cooperation.
