In a move to strengthen international ties, China’s top legislator Zhao Leji met with Eduardo Salhuana, President of the Congress of Peru, in Beijing on Monday.
Zhao, Chairman of the National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, expressed China’s commitment to working with Peru to implement key diplomatic outcomes and enhance their comprehensive strategic partnership. “We aim to bring more benefits to our countries and peoples,” Zhao stated.
Emphasizing the importance of legislative collaboration, Zhao highlighted that deepening China-Peru friendly cooperation aligns with the expectations of both nations’ people. He called for increased exchanges between high-level officials, specialized committees, and friendship groups to promote steady, long-term bilateral relations.
A notable focus of their discussion was the Chancay Port project in Peru, a landmark in China-Peru cooperation. Zhao noted that the port would promote high-quality Belt and Road Initiative collaboration between China and Peru, as well as with Latin America. He expressed hope that the Congress of Peru would continue to support the port’s construction.
“China and Peru have achieved fruitful cooperation in energy, mining, infrastructure, and communications,” Zhao said. “We’re actively exploring new areas like the digital economy, green development, and artificial intelligence. Let’s work together to create a sound legal environment for practical cooperation.”
Eduardo Salhuana affirmed Peru’s firm adherence to the one-China principle and expressed eagerness to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields, including economy, trade, investment, electricity, infrastructure, and culture. “All parties in the Congress of Peru support deepening bilateral relations with China,” Salhuana said. “We’re willing to enhance friendly exchanges with the NPC to contribute legislatively to our countries’ development.”
